Unlocking Potency: Understanding the Impact of Your Cannabis Edibles

Cannabis-infused foods have taken the realm of alternative consumption by storm, providing a discreet and delightful way to experience the effects of the beloved plant. Whether you're a medical marijuana patient seeking precise dosing or a connoisseur on a quest for a unique culinary adventure, it's crucial to comprehend the strength of your edibles.

In this blog topic, we'll guide you through the intricate landscape of cannabis edibles and unravel their mysteries. You will discover the factors influencing the potency of your creations, learn how to calculate the THC content, and gain valuable insights into dosing techniques. At the end of this journey, you will be equipped with the knowledge required to answer the pivotal question: "How potent are my cannabis edibles, really?" So, let's embark on this enlightening exploration into the world of edibles together. All you need is your calculator.

How to train Cannabis for higher yields

Calculating the Amount of Cannabis per Serving

  • P (Potency in milligrams of THC): This is the result of the calculation and indicates how many milligrams of THC are present per serving in your cannabis product.

  • G (Grams of Cannabis): This is the amount of cannabis used in your product, measured in grams.

  • S (Cannabis Potency in percentage): Cannabis potency represents the percentage of THC in the cannabis you're using. THC is the psychoactive component of cannabis responsible for its effects. This value is expressed in percentages.

  • N (Number of Servings): This is the estimated number of servings into which your cannabis product is divided.

  • The conversion factor of 10 is used because 1 gram is equal to 1,000 milligrams (as "milli-" stands for a thousandth), so the THC content needs to be converted to milligrams. For example, if the THC content of a cannabis product is 15%, this equates to 150 milligrams of THC per gram (15% of 1,000 milligrams). Hence, the 10 is incorporated into the formula to convert the percentage THC content into milligrams.

P = Total THC Amount in Milligrams:
P = 10(G × S) ÷ N
This formula is used to calculate the THC potency per serving (P) in a cannabis edible, based on the amount of cannabis (G), its potency (S), and the desired number of servings (N).

G = Amount of Cannabis per Serving:
G = N × P ÷ 10 × S
This formula is used to calculate the required amount of cannabis (G) based on the desired number of servings (N), the desired THC potency per serving (P), and the percentage potency of the cannabis used (S).

S = Overall Mixture Potency:
S = N × P ÷ 10 × G
This formula is used to calculate the potency of the cannabis used (S) based on the desired number of servings (N), the desired THC potency per serving (P), and the needed quantity of cannabis (G).

N = Number of Servings:
N = 10(G × S) ÷ P
This formula is used to calculate the number of servings (N) you can make from a specific amount of cannabis (G) with a given potency (S) and desired THC potency per serving (P).

An Example:

Let's explain the formula P = 10(G × S) ÷ N with an example of cannabis brownies:

  • G: The amount of cannabis, in this case, is 10 grams.

  • S: The cannabis potency is 15% (0.15 as a decimal).

  • N: We want to make 20 brownies.

Suppose you want to prepare 20 brownies (N = 20) with a consistent THC potency per serving. With the given values, we can calculate the THC potency per serving (P).

First, we calculate the total THC content in the cannabis (P in milligrams) using the formula: P = 10(G × S) ÷ N

  • P = 10(10 g × 0.15) ÷ 20

  • P = 10(1.5 g) ÷ 20

  • P = 15 g ÷ 20

P = 0.75 g

Now we know that the total THC content in the 10 grams of cannabis is 0.75 grams (750 milligrams).

To calculate the THC potency per serving (P), we divide this total THC content by the number of servings (N):

  • P per serving = Total THC (P) ÷ N

  • P per serving = 0.75 g ÷ 20

Potency per serving = 0.0375 g

This means that each brownie in this recipe will have a THC potency of 0.0375 grams (or 37.5 milligrams) per serving.

This value serves as a guideline for dosing and helps ensure that the brownies have the desired strength and dosage. However, please note that the actual THC potency in the brownies may vary depending on preparation and other factors. Therefore, it's important to dose edibles carefully and adjust the amount as needed to avoid unwanted effects.

Please consider that the amount of oil or butter used has no impact on the calculation. For example, if you're making enough cannabutter or cannabis oil for a batch of cookies, use the quantity specified in the recipe for 20 cookies.

Cannabis Edible THC Dosage

What should be the safe dosage in milligrams for consumption? The following table provides a rough guideline for doses that apply to most individuals. However, it's worth noting that a small group of cannabis edible enthusiasts may also enjoy extremely high THC doses of nearly 1000 milligrams.

Dosage Level                          Effects

  • 1 - 2.5 mg     - Mild, subtle relaxation

  • 2.5 - 5 mg     - Slight euphoria, increased sociability

  • 5 - 10 mg      - Moderate relaxation, heightened sensory perception

  • 10 - 20 mg    - Increased euphoria, potential for mild psychoactivity

  • 20 - 30 mg   - Intensified effects, potential for stronger psychoactivity

  • 30 - 50 mg   - Strong psychoactive effects, potential discomfort for some

  • 50 - 100 mg - Very strong psychoactivity, high likelihood of discomfort

  • 100+ mg     - Extremely high dose, not recommended for most users

Please keep in mind that individual tolerance and sensitivity to THC can vary greatly, so it's crucial to start with a low dose, especially if you're new to cannabis edibles, and gradually increase it as needed to achieve the desired effect. It's also important to be aware of local regulations and laws regarding cannabis consumption.
